WordPress - Plug-ins & Widgets!

wordpress

What are WordPressPlug-ins and Widgets is probably the first question that clients ask me when they venture into the WordPress Dashboard. For a Web Designer to create the pages you view on the internet, they need to have a knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP to name but a few. these are the languages 'spoken' by the web browsers and used to transform your content into the vision you wish to present to your viewer. The Plug-ins are simply mini blocks of programming that allow you to do great things and add functionality to your website without the need to learn any of this. Most plug-ins can be installed for you via the WordPress Dashboard.

Widgets are also downloadable, though many are included as standard, and they are used to display certain features or details. They usually have a very intuitive interface that make them user friendly, though I have come across some that are unnecessarily complicated. It's all trial and error with these little gems and if you don't like them, you simply delete them again.

Some widgets are designed to be applied to a single page template, i.e. they will affect all the pages generated from a single template, and some will affect the entire site depending on their purpose.

I have some personal favourites and have listed them below. If the Plug-in or widget has a View Screen Cast link next to it, I have created a short video to demonstrate how to use it.

If the plug-in / widget you wish to use is not available to be installed via the WordPress Dashboard, you can contact us and we will install it for you.

Please view the first Screen Cast to see how to search for and install Plug-ins.

You can search the WordPress website directly here:
